He was believed to help Ra fight against Apep in the solar barque each night, a god who protected the pharaoh while he was in battle.Lions were closely linked to royalty in Egyptian mythology and Maahes was considered to be the patron of the pharaoh.
By Greek times, he was attributed as being a god of storms and winds.
